I paint people because a face is the fastest route to feeling
We cannot invent faces in our dreams: every one we see is one we have seen before. "Just a Little Longer" was painted over months of quiet routine while she recovered from surgery, and its title comes from the small decision to stay in the bath until the water goes cold rather than step back into the day. The image is a photo-based study of a photograph by Zac Nirvana, used with his permission, chosen because his colour and composition carry the vibrant, moody register she wants in her own work. She is currently balancing commissions, including her first large one, with personal paintings, among them a portrait of her grandfather and late grandmother made as a gift. She has looked at this painting every day for eight months.
